Our Classes.

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”

Traditional approaches to Jiu Jitsu classes have been very didactic: instructors explain and demonstrate a series of specific steps, then the students work on repeating those exact steps with a training partner. That’s how we began. But after over 20 years of training, competing, teaching, and exploring different learning concepts, we believe there is a better way.

Our methodology.

There is no short-cutting the hard work and determination that is required to become proficient at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The single most important factor for improvement is consistent, intentional training. That means showing up as frequently as possible, being engaged, and having your own specific short and long-terms goals to work on.

In addition, it is critical to create a learning environment where students are actively engaged in problem-solving and decision-making. Through positional sparring and specific training, we aim to get students to think critically about a problem, and then find how to implement an effective response that leads to a better position or submission. While some concepts and techniques are demonstrated more explicitly, we find that the least effective and least enjoyable way to learn is to be given the answers directly. The process of skill acquisition through problem-solving, while extremely challenging, is more meaningful and exciting, and one that will best "stick" in the long-term.

  • For all levels, the Fundamentals Class is our core offering. We believe in building a solid foundation of fundamental principles that have the highest percentage of success, and we look to explore the elements of these techniques to improve your execution.

The classes are structured around a rotating 12-week curriculum, giving beginners a clear pathway to build foundational skills and confidence. The curriculum includes Guard Retention, Turtle Position, Takedowns, Seated Open Guard, Supine Open Guard, Closed Guard, Half Guard, Passing, Back Control & Escapes, Mount Control & Escapes, Side Control & Escapes, and Self Defense.

There is a heavy emphasis on positional and situational sparring, drilling with varying levels of resistance, and free sparring.

  • For blue belts and higher, our Advanced Class offers a greater challenge, focusing on high-level principles, refining details, and complex sequences to bring your game to the next level.

We used a “flipped classroom” model for our Advanced Classes, where students are also expected to come to class with their own goals and techniques to work on and troubleshoot.

There is a heavy emphasis on positional and situational sparring, drilling with varying levels of resistance, and free sparring to allow more time to put knowledge to practice.

  • For all levels, our Women’s Class follows a similar concept as the Fundamentals Classes, but is designed for women only. The class is highly collaborative, focusing on shared problem-solving and troubleshooting, and we look to explore principles and techniques to improve your game. Beginners are given the opportunity to build basic skills and confidence. There is a heavy emphasis on positional and situational sparring, and drilling with varying levels of resistance.

  • For students with a minimum of three months of consistent training, our Competition Class focuses on preparing students who are interested in competing, or actively getting ready for upcoming competitions. We work on all elements of a match, starting from the feet, moving to the ground, and working towards a submission.

This class offers high-intensity training alongside elements of mental preparation like troubleshooting, game planning, goal setting, etc.

There is a heavy emphasis on positional and situational sparring, and free sparring.

  • For all students, this no gi class focuses on the various ways we can start from a standing position, take the fight to the ground, and maintain a dominant position. The class incorporates offensive and defensive wrestling techniques through drills with varying levels of resistance, and situational sparring.

  • For all students, this class focuses on the fundamentals of striking using all “eight limbs” (kicks, punches, knees and elbows). Students will learn the basics of offense and defense (footwork, balance, fluidity, blocking, combinations, clinching) using thai pads, focus mits, and “live” drills using minimal equipment. Sparring will be an option, but not required, for those that develop a sound ability to execute the introductory principles. You will eventually need to purchase some equipment (gloves, shin guards), but it is not required to try to the class.
